Don't Pick the Poison Ivy...

Richmond is getting warm weather! Whether dining, relaxing, exercising, wandering, working or traveling I like to find ways to live outside once the temperatures rise above 65 degrees. I'm currently planning a week-long hike on the Appalachian Trail and through my preparation have come across some resources and local retailers that I'd like to share. Good hiking gear isn't cheap but there are ways to make it cheaper and once you're stocked, you're good to go! Knowledge is power so get smart through some of these free classes and keep tabs on event/class calendars for more.

Blue Ridge Mountain Sports offers free classes and info sessions as well as a wide range of gear. Today, March 30, at 7 pm BRMS at Chesterfield Towne Center is hosting Backpacking 101: The Pack and Sleep System. Topics covered will include internal and external pack selections, sleeping bag types and sleeping pads. There will be another free class on April 6 as a part of their Backpacking 101 series. See their website for directions and class details.

REI is one of the most recent additions to Short Pump and they're hosting a class on Tuesday, April 6, called Pack Light, Pack Right! The class starts at 7 pm and there is no cost although registration is required to ensure a seat. The discussion will focus on reducing pack weight without sacrificing product performance and hiker comfort.

Bug spray and campfire smoke are in the air!
