Events This Week

This weekend is Memorial Day! I hope all of you have something fun planned. (I'll be reuniting with some old college friends in Baltimore). In the meantime, here are a few fun happenings around town to keep you distracted until vacation time.

Wednesday, May 25 from 7 to 8:30 pm, Modern Richmond is hosting a film screening of Modern Views: A Conversation on Northwest Modern Architecture at the Virginia Center for Architecture located at 2501 Monument Ave. There's a $10 admission and our very own Emily Smith will be introducing the film! RSVP and get more info on Facebook here.

Thursday night is gonna be great. Sprout is hosting a free show (donations suggested) featuring Cinnamon Band (of Harrisonburg - recently toured with Handsome Furs), The Snowy Owls (of Richmond) and Silversmiths (of Richmond). I have seen the first two bands and I highly recommend! The show starts at 9:30 pm - RSVP on Facebook here. Also, this made me giggle (from The Snowy Owls webpage):

"The Snowy Owls have been observed as both solitary and social creatures. A single individual has been heard dissolving pop songs into enveloping sonic landscapes - a behavior also noted in other species such as the Yo La Tengo. When they gather in groups, the sounds range from sparse and dreamy to gritty and energetic, similar to Bedhead and Idaho varieties. Their vocalizations are typically hushed, creating intrigue through lyrical vignettes."

Friday night, Balliceaux is hosting its third 1930s themed dance party - PLF Presents SPEAKEASY! Come dressed in your best fedoras, suspenders and/or flapper garb. The event begins at 10:30 pm and is free to all. There will be old time music mixed with new school tunes, a dance contest, costume contest and a photo booth. What a night. RSVP on Facebook here.
